As a documentary and street photographer Maurizio Saroli's main areas of interest are society and culture. In his work he combines the emotions of nostalgia, empathy, curiosity and dignity, with the principals of classical art: proportion, balance, harmony and idealism. However, depending on the nature of the project, he is not averse to using a more 'unprincipled' approach; one of unbalanced framing, wide angles, high contrast and are, bure, boke. All of his photographs are imbued with humanity, and his approach in capturing these images is towards the candid and the natural. 

Although some of his earlier work is in digital format, he now shoots only 35mm film. His nostalgia for the darkroom, the simplicity of mechanical cameras and the beauty of film has brought him back to analogue photography, where his interest in this art form first began.
